Decision: Release 28 October 2021

Thank you for your recent request under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 (the Act). In respect of the scope of your request regarding our applications, please see the following table: Applications currently awaiting decision are - 753 Cases currently awaiting validation - 511 Applications currently awaiting decision which were validated prior to 21 March 2020 - 59 By way of context, the annual reports for the last 6 years show the numbers of cases approved or refused by the Crofting Commission to be as follows: YEAR APPROVED REFUSED TOTAL 2015/16 990 14 1004 2016/17 891 8 899 2017/18 925 21 946 2018/19 1265 25 1290 2019/20 1260 23 1283 2020/21 857 22 879 It is notable that the numbers of cases processed in 2018/19 and 2019/20 were about a third higher than the average of the preceding three years, reflecting the priority given to casework by the current Board and management. The downturn in processing in 2020/21 is attributable to COVID-19, and this was the main cause of the current backlog.
