Crofting Commission welcomes Croft House Grant Scheme Consultation

07/01/2015

This week the Scottish Government launched a consultation on their Croft House Grant Scheme (CHGS). The scheme provides financial assistance for the improvement and maintenance of crofter housing with the aim of attracting and retaining people in remote areas of the Highlands and Islands.

For the next 12 weeks, the Scottish Government is formally seeking views on the future shape of the scheme and its payment rates.

The Crofting Commission welcomes the consultation and it is encouraging crofters to respond to the Scottish Government’s proposed amendments.

Crofting Commission Convener, Susan Walker, commented that “The CHGS provides important financial assistance to attract and retain people in our crofting communities and also in helping crofters to fulfil their duty of living on or close to their croft.  The payment rates have not been revised for 10 years and are in need of review to ensure that the grant helps crofters in genuine housing need.

“From our discussions with other agencies and stakeholders, there are a range of innovative ideas for how the CHGS could be developed to contribute to providing housing solutions in the crofting counties and help to stem the flow of young people from these areas.  We encourage crofters and stakeholders to submit these ideas to the consultation for consideration.”

Western Isles Commissioner, Murdo Maclennan added that “A successful housing policy and assistance is a key factor in securing the future of crofting. I welcome the consultation and hope that all who have an interest, will make a meaningful contribution and that improvements to the scheme are implemented promptly.”

The Croft House Grant Scheme Consultation will last for 12 weeks and close on 31 March 2015.  It can be accessed via: www.scotland.gov.uk/Publications/2015/01/4893
