Calling Creative Crofters

Registers of Scotland are inviting crofters and their families throughout Scotland to take part in a ‘click your croft’ photography competition.
The competition, run in association with the Scottish Crofting Federation and the Crofting Commission, aims to find out more about what this traditional way of life means to crofters in 2014.
Sheenagh Adams, Keeper of the Registers of Scotland, said: “There’s a fascinating mix of old and new in crofting, and crofting land is often seen as being among the most beautiful landscapes in Scotland. ‘Click your croft’ is a celebration of this land and the crofters who work it, and is a great opportunity to give the rest of Scotland a snapshot of what crofting looks like today.”
Derek Flyn, Chair of the Board of the Scottish Crofting Federation, commented: “Here is an opportunity for active crofters and their families to show what modern crofting means to them. Strangers may enjoy deserted, remote locations but where crofters work their own land there is freedom and happiness. Let’s catch that on camera.”
For Crofting Commission Convener, Susan Walker, the crofting landscape is a unique blend of place and people. “The way crofting has developed is very different over the crofting counties, with the pattern of townships in the Western Isles varying greatly from the crofting landscape in Caithness for instance. So I am looking forward to seeing the entries to the ‘click your croft’ competition and sharing with the people of Scotland images of crofting today.”
The winner will receive a Canon EOS 700D digital SLR camera with 18-55mm STM and 55-250mm lenses, plus accessories. Two runners up will be awarded a framed print of their image.
Photos should express the elements that the photographer loves most about crofting and could be anything from people to landscapes, machinery to plants; the only restriction is that all photos must be taken on crofting land and should be a recognisable representation of crofting.
